Tips ~ Wireless Microphone Systems


  • Weak or worn-out transmitter batteries are a common cause of wireless problems, including complete failure, poor range, distorted audio and more susceptible to interference.

  • Always use fresh, new and high-quality alkaline batteries as they provide longer battery life than the normal cheaper types. Cheaper and weak batteries have much shorter life.

  • Signal strength and operating range tend to drop off as the battery dies, so it’s generally best to change your batteries at the beginning of every show / service, even if they aren’t completely dead.

  • For optimum reception, line-of-sight (clear of obstacles in between) should be maintained between the receivers antennas and the transmitters.

  • For optimum reception, reduce the distance between receivers and transmitters.

  • For optimum reception, install receivers as high and away from the floors for improved reception.

  • For optimum reception, select True Diversity receivers over antenna diversity or non-diversity receivers for best operating range and reduced dropouts.

  • For optimum reception, tightly fastened and orient receiver antennas to approx. 45 degree.

  • Install receivers and antennas away from potential known interference sources such as metal objects, digital equipment, lighting systems, dimmers, computers & vehicles, electrical power equipment.

  • If the transmissions are unreliable within the usual operating range, check to see for potential interference or intermodulation sources.

  • Any source of RF energy may interfere with the normal functioning of implanted cardiac pacemakers or AICD devices.

  • A body-pack transmitter should not be worn where it is immediately adjacent to such a medical device. Note also that any medical-device disruption will cease when the RF transmitting source is turned off.

  • Do not cover the handheld transmitter antenna with hand & ascertain bodypack with an external antenna isn't wadded up or bent when wearing it. Operating range will be limited and frequent signal dropouts as it severely impairs its transmission.

  • Use MIPRO factory pre-coordinated frequencies in setting up multiple wireless systems to avoid interference with each other. Consult a wireless expert if you would like to mix systems from different brands or different series.

  • Do not mix receivers and transmitters with other brands and series. Use identical receiver and transmitter brands and series.

  • High squelch setting reduces operating range. If interference problems require a high squelch setting, eliminate the interference or change frequency to avoid the range loss.

  • Check the squelch control setting on the receiver. A higher squelch setting provides better protection against interference but reduces operating range. Set the control to the lowest position that reliably mutes the interference.

  • To reduce feedback, place wireless microphones and speakers far apart.

  • To reduce feedback, place the speakers toward the audience and away from the stage.

  • To reduce feedback, place each wireless mic as close as you can to the mouth (close miking)

  • To reduce feedback, place installed wireless microphone behind the speakers.

  • To reduce feedback, turn down unused microphones and minimized mics.

  • To reduce feedback, use a line array or column speaker overhead as it projects much less sound onto the stage than a conventional speaker.
